69 Performance Club: Framed Body

69 Performance Club: Framed Body

On Monday 22nd April 2019 in Forum Lenteng, 69 Performance Club held the 14th edition of the performance art series with the theme Framed Body, curated by Hafiz Rancajale. This series comprises nine performances from 69 Performance Club participants: Manshur Zikri with the work entitled Formation L; Dhanurendra Pandji with The Worshipper; Maria Silalahi with Gone By The Feet; Taufiqurrahman with Installing My Body; Pingkan Polla with Untitled; Syahrullah with Amber; Theo Nugraha with Plague; Maria Deandra with Untitled; and Prashasti Wilujeng Putri with Drapery. All of these performances attempt to elevate the concept of the body through interaction with particular objects and explore how it relates to its surrounding space. The action of the body leads to the conveying of messages, statements and ideas in the minds of the spectators. Responding to the curatorial theme about framing the body, each performance also examined the conception of and relations between the body, still objects and surrounding space through various approaches.

In general, body and space are the first to be addressed in performance art. The body is presented as a concept, yet could also be seen as an aesthetic form since it merges with its depiction in visual arts. The body in performance art has a different cultural history and subjective meaning to each artist. Therefore, the body has a political, as well as aesthetic, power and the presence of the body in performance art is a statement of its comprehension through the eyes of the artist.

To be perceived by the public, the presence of the body cannot be separated from its relation to space. As an art form that presents bodies in a very organic space, the spectators are able to explore the possibilities of space and see different forms of the performance from different perspectives and even become part of the performance itself.

69 Performance Club performance series will be presented monthly in various spaces. In the upcoming 15th edition, 69 Performance Club will show the participants’ performances together with other performance artists at Goethe Haus in Jakarta. During the entire month, the participants prepared their work by taking part in the performance art workshop which enabled them to develop their performance piece as will be presented in the upcoming series.
