PiL (Politicizing Image Ltd.) in Farocki Now: A Temporary Academy

PiL (Politicizing Image Ltd.) is a collaboration project by members of several collectives in Jakarta which was extended from the invitation of Harun Farocki Institut. This collaborative project tries to read the context of Harun Farocki’s work and thought in the situation of the aesthetic regime in Indonesia through the works of cinema in the New Order era and the presentation of different ideas from various collectives. For about 3 months, the participants which are: Farid Rakun (Institut ruangrupa), Manshur Zikri (Forum Lenteng), Mahardika Yudha (Ok.Video / Forum Lenteng), Abi Rama (69 Performance Club / Forum Lenteng), Anggraeni Widhiasih (Forum Lenteng / Purusha Research Cooperative) and Raslene (Ok.Video/Lab Laba-Laba) hold regular meetings to discuss Harun Farocki’s films, New Order cinema and the intersection between those two.

The findings from those discussions were then presented in Berlin by Farid Rakun, Raslene and Anggraeni Widhiasih in Farocki Now: A Temporary Academy which is a forum for workshops, presentations and debates which explore the contemporary relevance of Harun Farocki’s works and thoughts, placing it in a new context and activating its productive potential. That four-day forum was held at Silent Green Kulturquartier, Berlin, on 18 – 21 October 2017 and was organized by Harun Farocki Institut by inviting six group studies from art schools, universities and self-organized educational spaces. In addition to Jakarta which is represented by PiL, the event also invites group studies from Alexandria, Berlin, Philadelphia and Postdam.
