ARKIPEL Garden of Earthly Delights – 11th Jakarta International Documentary and Experimental Film Festival 2024 screening program, reflecting on the experiments in ARKIPEL Noli Me Tangere (previous edition) and regular screenings at Bioskopforlen, was held simply and intimately at Bioskopforlen, at the headquarters of Forum Lenteng. In 2024, the festival’s theme is Garden of Earthly Delights, taken from the title of a painting by world maestro Hieronimus Bosch (1515). The main focus of the year’s theme is to look at the sensory aesthetics in cinema that have an impact on how films provide opportunities for their ability to stimulate the audience to consciousnesses that are not just entertainment, but political awareness of the problems of society and the world. The series of ARKIPEL activities began with the opening ceremony of the festival on August 24, 2024 at the Forum Lenteng headquarters on Jalan H. Shibi and the screening of four opening films from the International Competition program entitled De Occulta Imagene by Stefano P. Testa (Italy), Harvesting the Net: A Tale of Digital Gardening by Alessandro Longo & Anna Fasolato (Germany), and The Kitten’s Tea Party by MilleFeuille (Canada) followed by a conversation at the festival rooftop lounge on the 3rd floor of Forum Lenteng. This year, 35 films qualified for the International Competition. Two of them are from Indonesia, Difraksi (2024) by Sigat Rambito, and SWEET PLASTIK (2024) by Alfred Banze. Overall, this year’s festival screened 66 films consisting of International Competition, Candrawala, Special Presentation, and Special Screening programs. In the Special Presentation, ARKIPEL collaborates with curators from Hong Kong Video art archiving institutions, namely Videotage Hong Kong represented by Phoebe Wong (who is also member of the International Competition Jury) and Shang Chun (Videotage, Hong Kong). They curated a program “maybe, somewhere to go” that showcases experimental films from East Asia region during the last 20 years. We also invited curator from MENA region, Ali Hussein AlAdawy as member of the jury and curator for program ”we are not invisible labors, of your museums and palace” that showcases 3 films by MENA’s women directors who excavated invisible histories of the region. ARKIPEL also collaborated with Taiwan Docs, a research body of Taiwan documentary films connected to Taiwan International Documentary Festival (TIDF). Our curator, Alifah Melisa curated their archive to be screened in the program ‘Reflection on Taiwan Cinema in the 1960s’ and invited programmers, Alexandre Huang and Chung Pei Hua from TIDF to discuss the context in the screening. This year, Candrawala, ARKIPEL’s reading program on Indonesian film trends today is curated by Wahyu Budiman Dasta. Candrawala program showcases five films from Indonesian young filmmakers from Lombok, Bandung, Bali, Bangka, and Jakarta. This year’s special screening presents three films produced by Milisifilem Collective’s visual experimentation class Batch VII – Teratai (Lotus). The films produced by Milisifilem Collective respond to their study experience in the last 6 months and are framed in the Aesthetics of Ethics program curated by Otty Widasari. On August 1, 2024 at the Awards Night, Luminous Shores (2023) by Maira Ayala (Paraguay) received the Peransi Award. This was followed by bleared eyes of blue glass (2024) by Kyujae Park from Republic of Korea, which received the Jury Award. This year’s Forum Lenteng Award was presented to Staying Put (2023) by Nico Bunnik. The ARKIPEL Award as the highest honor was received by Ocean Mud Pickle (2023) by Paribartana Mohanty from India. The five judges who selected the films for the three awards were Hafiz Rancajale, Phoebe Wong, Akbar Yumni, Ali Hussein AlAdawy and Afrian Purnama. The ARKIPEL Garden of Earthly Delights Awarding Night was closed by a gathering of international guests, the jury, filmmakers, audience and members of Forum Lenteng in the festival lounge.
