Candikala Exhibits in Terracotta Triennale

Candikala Exhibits in Terracotta Triennale

On October 11 – 16, 2021, Jatiwangi art Factory held its first Terracotta Triennale. Curated by Ismal Muntaha and Hafiz Rancajale, this triennale is a collective follow-up action of the Kota Terrakota as one of the long-term spatial plans of Majalengka Regency. As an art event, this triennale invites various interdisciplinary participants; artist, architects, archaeologists, policy makers, ceramist, as well as communities/collectives, who are imagined as actors of developments as we integrate artistic approach as a part of regional planning.

With the theme “Prayer for the Land”, this triennale becomes a reflective moment to see land as a concept related to sovereignty, cultural and spiritual values, environmental improvement, resource preservation, as well as a more sustainable economic development.

Candikala, a project initiated by Forum Lenteng, is one of the participating projects in Terracotta Triennale. Candikala is an effort to document and recontextualize classical (Hindu-Buddhist period) Indonesian cultural heritage through documentary films, artworks, and writings. Members who participated in this works are Luthfan Nur Rochman, Dhanurendra Pandji, Wahyu Budiman Dasta, and Dini Adanurani.

In their work titled Terracotta Connection (Pilot Project): Silsilah Tanah, Candikala presented their ongoing research on the terracotta culture on the North Coast of West Java. The similarity between the terracotta artifacts and the method of building the temple structure is a common thread that can be a foundation of the terracotta culture in Jatiwangi today. These foundings are our proposal to a long-term research which dissects the imagination of our soil culture through the genealogy of soil, soil diplomacy, and regional terracotta aesthetics and technology.

Terracotta Triennale also held a symposium entitled “Re-imagining Public Policy through Kota Terrakota”. This symposium attempts to formulate multitudes of new models of a sustainable and inclusive development; where art, with its cultural impedimenta, enables the community to actively participate in public policy formulation as well as economic, ecology, and cultural development.

The symposium is set to be a space of multiple encounters among government actors, experts, scholars, cultural practitioners, and community to formulate agreements on regional sustainability. The panels are formulated out of our collective imaginings of a concerted effort in composing relevant recommendations for public policies to be enacted collectively under a comprehensive regional work plan, at least, in the regency of Majalengka. This panel was held throughout October 13 – 14, 2021, organized by Pychita Julinanda and Dini Adanurani in collaboration with members of Jatiwangi art Factory.
