In June 2024, Forum Lenteng started an experimental sound project, which focuses on water knowledge and the impact of climate change, especially in Kalibata Pulo, South Jakarta, a populated area in Pancoran district, which is adjacent to a garment business that has been established for decades. For years, this area has experienced problems with access to clean water, polluted rivers, household waste, environmental management, and seasonal flooding every rainy season. Young artists delved deeper into the ecological conditions of Kalibata Pulo through an artistic approach and involved residents to jointly explore issues such as environmental pollution, waste management, the impact of flooding, etc. The activities in Kalibata Pulo are run by Sigisora – a platform that frames urban and natural sound as well as its social and political contexts through art. Community Forum The Community Forum was held in YAKYF Foundation at January 22 where the Futures of Listening team presented their aims and findings to the residents of Kalibata Pulo. It also involved discussion with community leaders, the local village head, and activists concerned with water-related issues. Cooking and Lunch Together Held in January 23, this activity aimed to strengthen relationships and foster a sense of togetherness among residents. Riyan, our friend and artist from West Sumatera, enlivened the event by making rendang in a large pot for the community, making it a performative act that engaged everyone. Teater Pohon Ceri Performed by the children in Kalibata Pulo along with facilitator Tuba Fallopi, completed the festivity of the event on the 23rd after lunch. The performance highlighted the children’s concerns, memories, and hopes regarding water and rivers by framing everyday activities. Hanging Out at the Placemaking Sites A relaxed gathering at the placemaking area to exchanfe stories surrounding memories of water, shared experiences between Sahintepe (Istanbul) & Kalibata Pulo (Jakarta), and hopes for addressing water issues in the region. The placemaking area was constructed starting from January 20 and completed on January 23. Film Screening As a closing event, the film Anak Bintang by Ratno Timoer (1974) was screened, inviting residents to reflect on the issues discussed throughout the activities. – Over six months of activities in Kalibata Pulo, the Futures of Listening: Water Knowledge from Two Cities team initiated a placemaking activity designed by the Urban Koop team. This activity encouraged the community to share stories, play, and engage with the entire team. Listening became a crucial part of our process—everyday matters and lighthearted intergenerational stories that were previously overlooked have now become significant, as we learn from these shared experiences together. Futures of Listening: Water Knowledge From Two Cities is initiated by Prof. Suk-Jun Kim (University of Aberdeen), Forum Lenteng – Jakarta, and Urban.Koop – Istanbul), and supported by the British Academy and the University of Aberdeen.
