Golden Memories at the 13th JAFF: Disruption

Golden Memories at the 13th JAFF: Disruption

On 28 and 30 November 2018, Golden Memories (2018) screened at  Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF) 2018. Golden Memories is shown as part of the Asian Perspective program curated by Kamila Andini; a non-competition program that focuses on the latest problems and phenomena in cinema in Asia region. The screening takes place in the Empire XXI theater.

The atmosphere of the screening was exciting. A short discussion between the audience and Golden Memories filmmaker was held afterwards. At the first screening on November 28, 2018, Mahardika Yudha and Afrian Purnama came and responded to the audience’s questions. The question that came out was a lot revolving around the context of the film and the background of the film was made.

On the second screening on November 30, 2018, the audience’s enthusiasm to watch the film did not recede. During the Q&A session, some audiences asked further questions, one of them is about the development of Home Movies traditions in the future. The filmmaker who was present at the time, Afrian Purnama, thought that the form of self-made videos such as Vlogs or Instagram Stories might be considered as the contemporary Home Movies, although it is debatable because there is a difference in intention in seeing the moving images. Home Movies is intended for small consumption, such as family and close friends, while Vlogs or Instagram Stories can be intentionally created as self-actualization of the creator to be seen by the public.

Overall, the screening of Golden Memories at JAFF 2018 was very exciting since we were able to see different responses and feedback from each person to this film.
