‘The Collage Text and Found Images Project’ is a project that interprets freely Kafka’s text into visual experimentation. Through Franz Kafka’s short story The Metamorphosis (1915), the participants are encouraged to dive deep into the texts and use black and white found images to reimagine the text visually. Every participant is encouraged to discuss with the others, to critique and discuss on what aspect of the text each collage represents. Each participant is allowed to freely reinterpret and recreate the story, by combining the use of selected images, composition, texture, and lines to create a completely new image. Other than reinterpreting the text, this project is also a way for the participants to react to and reflect on the current social situation regarding the pandemic. The pandemic has forced us to stay in our homes and isolate ourselves from our relationships. This is analogical to the situation faced by Gregor Samsa, the character in The Metamorphosis, who is systematically isolated from his social relationships because he does not fit into that system anymore. Reflecting on the current social distancing situation makes the ‘The Collage Text and Found Images Project’ extremely relevant to the current social condition, and gives room to the participants to look at their own situation and that of society by presenting these freely assembled collages, in the hopes that it will give a space for critique the audience is looking at our current situation.
