The 2018 Media Art Week with the theme of Local Genius takes place from 26 August – 2 September 2018. During the eight days, this activity took place in Palu, precisely at the Central Sulawesi Province Cultural Park and the Momoyo Art Space, Forum Sudut Pandang. Media Art Week initiated and facilitated by the Directorate of Art, Directorate General of Culture, Ministry of Culture and Education Republic of Indonesia in collaboration with media art activists, local governments, and communities that have been focusing on this technology-based art. Local Genius is raised as an effort to read how local experimentation can provide a new perspective in the development of contemporary art. The experimentation was carried out by various artists who were no longer concentrated in certain regions – especially Jakarta, Bandung and Yogyakarta – as centres for the development of Indonesian modern art; contemporary art provides a vast opportunity for combining the possibilities of locality, both in form and context. The practice of local experimentation can be read as the ability to survive from outside culture, accommodate its elements, integrate it with local culture, control, and of course be able to determine the direction of cultural development in the future. This was conveyed by Hafiz Rancajale and Andang Kelana, curators of 2018 Media Art Week, in the curatorial introduction. 2018 Media Art Week – Local Genius consists of six programs: Opening Night, Daily Exhibition, Artist Talk, Multimedia Workshop, Multimedia Performance, and Educational Tour. 2018 Media Art Week presents 25 works from 25 individual artists and collective artists from various regions throughout Indonesia.
