pars pro toto—Wahyu Budiman Dasta’s Solo Exhibition

The concept of “pars pro toto“—derived from textual tradition—is a project-based artwork as well as the first solo exhibition of Wahyu Budiman Dasta a.k.a. Walay. The exhibition which is curated by Manshur Zikri is being held at Forum Lenteng. Walay has a distinctive reception mode when interpreting imaginary perspective lines on real objects. In the sketches, we can see how angles and lines appear distorted—but unique—from objective reality.

For approximately one month (Oct – Nov 2019), Walay traced his personal understanding and skills in creating and composing lines. There are two forms he investigated, the first one is a combination of nirmana (pencil on paper) and the second is sketching of objects (Chinese ink on paper). In his combination works, lines are produced without objective reference, but discipline on the grid that fills the field. Meanwhile, in Chinese ink works, lines of the results of subjective interpretations of real objects are strung freely, leaving aside the shackles of composition which burden the paper field. The contrast between the two models is a key word for reviewing the polemical construction of the aesthetic that is being explored by the artist.

pars pro toto tries to frame the artist’s mode of selection on the essential aspects of real objects, which he transform into a very selective mimesis process. Walay’s abstraction signature is more likely as in we saw in the realm of text rather than became a deformative intention that rejects the reality of the objects.

The exhibition will run until 23 December 2019 at Forum Lenteng.
