Solo Exhibition of Maria C. Silalahi – A Laity’s Song of Praise

KIDUNG SI JEMAAT or A Laity’s Song of Praise is a project-based work as well as Maria Silalahi’s first solo exhibition held at Forum Lenteng and curated by Anggraeni Widhiasih. She exhibits a large portion of the results of Maria’s ongoing art project entitled “residency at our own home” (Maria will continue the project after her solo exhibition).

In A Laity’s Song of Praise, Maria tried to read the relationship between the Batak-Christian tradition and the context of the urban location as a small narrative. Her research for traditional practices in the urban context was then manifested in a “recording”, similar to the work of archival production that produced a kind of “mnemonic device”. The impatience experienced and recorded by Maria in her work can be interpreted as a liminal situation or a threshold situation. In a work of art, a liminality can manifest as a creative force that manifests in various works.

In addition to displaying dozens of pieces of paper containing handwritten notes and sketches of drawings made using red and black markers, on the opening night of this solo exhibition Maria also presented a performance artwork, entitled M 1/1.

The exhibition takes place at Forum Lenteng on July 13 – July 31, 2019.
